Statement on the vote to appoint new California Attorney General, Xavier Becerra

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Palo Alto) released the following statement in response to the confirmation of Xavier Becerra to become California's newest Attorney General:

Today, I voted to confirm Governor Brown’s appointment of U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra to be California’s Attorney General. I can’t think of anyone more qualified or prepared to serve in this vital role at a time when the progress we’ve made in California expanding civil rights and protecting our environment is threatened by the incoming presidential administration.

Congressman Becerra embodies the American Dream, and he has dedicated his career — as a legal aid attorney, Deputy Attorney General, Assemblymember, and Member of Congress — to protecting the rights of all Americans. I know he will work tirelessly to safeguard landmark legislation and voter-approved constitutional amendments that combat global warming, integrate and educate immigrants, expand voting rights, and improve gun safety. I am proud to support Congressman Becerra’s appointment to be our next Attorney General and look forward to working with him in this new and critically important role.
