SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park) has named the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County (Legal Aid) as the 23rd Assembly District ‘Nonprofit of the Year’ for the organization’s outstanding contributions to the community.

“I am honored to recognize the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County for their tireless advocacy and pursuit of equity in our justice system and in our communities,” said Assemblymember Marc Berman. “At a time when both marginalized communities and the legal profession are under unprecedented attack, legal aid clinics are a shining light, ensuring that everyone has access to zealous representation. As an attorney, I know firsthand that strong representation can make the difference when trying to navigate a complex legal system, and it is too often unavailable to those who need it most.”

“Our program teams work tirelessly to improve life for the people of San Mateo County, not only serving individual clients but also identifying and fixing systemic issues that keep families from critical resources. We’re honored to be recognized by Assemblymember Berman as a 2025 Nonprofit of the Year,” said M. Stacey Hawver, Executive Director of Legal Aid.

For over six decades, Legal Aid has provided legal services to low-income families, seniors, people with disabilities, and survivors of domestic violence. Partnering with dozens of law firms across the region, Legal Aid has empowered communities throughout San Mateo County by providing access to essential legal resources. In 2024, Legal Aid opened 1,722 cases, helping over 83 families keep their homes, providing aid to 555 clients with a disability, and recovering $404,800 for clients.
